Fireflies

This song by Owl City, who is a one man band I might add, is a very bouncy song that can get annoying, but for the most part is a good song. Fireflies was kind of confusing to me at first. I didn't understand why a guy would want to make a song that was so girly. Adam Young, however, is a light-hearted guy who has many 'whimsical' ideas of life. In his own personal blog he has child like traits that show how young he is at heart. One of the reasons explaining why he would make a song that sounds like a child help him create. Not in a bad way, just in an open minded way. I feel like this song is a joke, but Adam really likes to express his opinions in his songs which can make them sound like music for younger children.
The song Fireflies was a big hit and made headlines in the industry. I don't think in my lifetime I've heard a song that was so good that was only produced by one man. Lyrics, music and all. But this song is really just about how he thinks youth is taken away too quickly. When we're kids we all think time takes forever to pass by and that its gonna take soooo long to be like the older kids. The reality of it is that that time passes by all too quickly and we don't even realize it till it's too late. Now I'm always thinking about how short my weeks are and how quickly the day is done. Ask anyone over the age of about 16 and they'll tell you how quickly time passes for them and what they'd give to just have more time in a day. Sure, there are things we all wait for to come, but we don't cherish the time we're living in now. In about five years I'm positive I'll be saying, "Damn I wish I was 18 again."

I Need a Doctor

A new song by one of my favorite artists. Eminem has made so many unforgettable songs and just came out with another thats been stuck playing in my head for days now. Its got such a catchy beat and I love how he incorporates a lighter tone in his music. Instead of most other rap artists, he doesn't just have a hard beat going the whole time while he raps quickly to the beat he's dropping. At the beginning of the song and at the chorus he has a female voice to play harmony to his fast paced rhymes.
This whole song is about Eminem's mentor, basically the father of his music. Dr. Dre. His whole career was started by Dr. Dre and he owes his fame to Dre. In 1996 Dr. Dre signed Eminem to his record label, Aftermath Entertainment. Eminem soon exploded onto the music scene and quickly became a well known rapper. For many years Eminem has been constantly putting out new music and keeping his name afloat in the sea of the industry.

Finally, during all of his years as a famous musician he came out with this song supporting the founder of his fame. Dr. Dre is said to be coming out with a new CD and Eminem incorporates this in his song. He mentions Dre being his biggest help in getting his feet off the ground and sings, "All I know is you came to me when I was at my lowest. You picked me up, breathed new life in me. I owe my life to you." attributing his success to Dre. But when he says, "You saved my life, now maybe it's my time to save yours." he is explaining that he will help Dr. Dre with the problems he is facing in making his producing his own music.
I love this song for its beat, the rhymes, and the fact that eminem is trying to be supportive to the man who he owes his success to. He realizes without Dr.'s help he would've amounted to nothing and hasn't let his ego get big enough to make him too cocky to realize his roots.

Mr. Brightside

The Killers. A decent band with some good songs, but not many hits. Mr. Brightside however is one that made the cut. This song is about a man who starts thinking too much about a girl who he has only just kissed. "It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this", shows that he really didn't want this coming out of just a kiss with a girl he isn't in a relationship with.
"I'm coming out of my cage, And I've been doing just fine, Gotta gotta be down, Because I want it all " these lyrics could be explaining that he just got out of a relationship and that he's doing alright, but he has to be open to everything that comes with the love that he wants to find. Maybe he's just looking for a rebound, but then why would he be making such a big deal over this girl that he just met?
More lyrics say, "Now I'm falling asleep, and she's calling a cab," showing a dream he's having. He becomes so obsessed with this girl that he imagines she is with other men, and it makes him sick. He admits its all in his head, yet he can't stop thinking about this girl. Although, this is just my interpretation of this song, it could be a song about a guy who is actually dating this woman and thinks that she is cheating on him. But the lyrics that say "Open up my eager eyes, Cause I'm Mr. Brightside," really convince me that he just gets eager about every girl, and he calls himself Mr. Brightside sarcastically. If he seriously thought about the bright side of things he wouldn't be talking about this girl with another guy, so he obviously means that he always gets paranoid and thinks too much about the smallest things.
